Sorry party people. I have been out for the count the last couple weeks.
I was very disappointed to see not much has happened since I last posted. I was hoping that the CES would produce some news but the major players basically sat this one out. Samsung was there, mostly touting their new televisions, but show off the next generation of their bendy screen which looks like it is getting close to consumer grade. What you do with it I will leave to more creative and technical minds, but the maturity of the system leads credence to the rumors that the Google Xphone was seriously considering the technology earlier on.
The only thing to report at all is that there are new rumors calling for the Xphone announcement at the Google I/O this May. This is consistent with my time table and is the most obvious. These rumors came with the addition calling for the phone to have a 5″ edge to edge screen. This points to a confusion that the Google Xphone will be outside the Nexus program. There have been rumors that the next Nexus phone will be the Nexus 5 – a 5″ phone. I have not run across any rumors of another manufacture working on the next generation Nexus. My feeling is that Google has realized that their current naming strategy of numbering by screen size – can not work for more than 1 generation. I believe the Xphone will be a Nexus device or signal the end of the Nexus program. ‘The Nexus X’ is a name I could get behind. Of course it just as possible that the Xphone will not be the name at all. Another possible option is the Xphone is the a launch separate from the Nexus line and will represent a new Google designed, Google sold, top of the line phone designed to show off features and for geeks who are willing to buy a phone at full price without carrier incentives. In this case the Nexus line would be the consumer line, with the X line setting the benchmarks. From what I have been reading, Motorola will maintain its relationship with Verizon and we should expect to see the Google Xphone land on that carrier.
I will continue to keep my ear to the ground – and will post any news or rumors when I hear it.
If you know something I do not, please send it in!
– UPDATE —
Rumor is starting to be taken as fact.
I just ran across this article from the admittedly unreliable Hardware.info that has changed the tone from speculation and prediction to assured confidence; Google Xphone will have a 5″ screen and a ceramic case. I had been under the impression that the ceramic casing was an early concept that was abandoned. I think they may, like me, just be regurgitation things they read and miss-understood. The other thing they mentioned is that the 5″ screen will be in a form factor smaller than the Galaxy S III, which may mean its thinness was traded off – for the better in my opinion.
I will let you know when I know more.
