It is frustrating to be proved wrong so quickly but mere hours after I posted earlier this week new rumors emerged that my predictions of the Xphone’s position in the Google family is exactly the opposite of what I thought. It now appears that consensus is building around the idea that the Xphone will be a new premium phone that will live outside the Nexus program. The details seem a little whacky to me when taken as a whole. The phone will supposedly be sold by all carriers and sold interdependently by Google. The Google sold version will be unsupervised and unlocked. The Verizon version will be sold for $299 but be sold with all of Verizon’s bloatware, unless… you pay $15 a month for the permission to have the phone unlocked. A monthly charge for an unlocked boot loader seems crazy to me, and may point to the fact that not all the rumors that have emerged over the last few days should be taken too seriously.
So now the the fun stuff.
The other things to emerge:
The announcement will most certainly be during Google’s I/O even in mid-May.
The release is rumored to be early July. This should be taken with salt as we all know too well that release dates can slip and slip.
It will most probably be running and be announced with Key Lime Pie – which looks to be 5.0
The all reports point to a 5″ screen – which many outlets are saying will be “unbreakable.”
Battery Life will be a feature of the new phone.
Most of this information is being gleamed from a Larry Page quote:
“You shouldn’t have to worry about constantly recharging your phone. When you drop your phone, it shouldn’t go splat. Everything should be a ton faster and easier. There’s real potential to invent new and better experiences.”
So – no news on resolutions, processors, or cameras but at this point those will be the least interesting things about the phone. It will be sharp and fast and probably have MPs to spare. The things we don’t we don’t know intrigue me most.
Stay tuned!
I’m appalled that noone is considering this to be the chrome phone.
the market for browser based mobile devices is inevitable. I preserve plans for these systems so I won’t get to much of its potential away. just amagine what google is cooking to compete with Firefox OS and geeksphone’s Keon and Peak.
I think you are right. I do not think we will see this integration this time around, but Key Lime Pie might be the first step in the combining of the Chrome OS and Android.
My wish list:
5″ 1080p screen
Exynos 5 processor
Sd card slot
13mp camera
3600 Mha battery which would provide all day battery and then some.
It should be a huge jump in durability. Not indestructible but SOLID.
The build quality should be on par with HTC and the iPhone not plasticky like Samsung. It should FEEL like a premium phone.
I want killer design. Not boxy like the Droids of before, sleek and sexy like the Nexus 4.
Most important of all, Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie has the ability to truly forge Google ahead, to set them up as the innovater in the mobile space. Innovation. Push forward with Google Now. Push the edge with design. Give us something we’ve never seen before with this phone.
“Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.” – Steve Jobs
I am with you. I am nervous that the Xphone is going to come in the ‘carbon fiber’ body of the Droid Razor. I really hope they have pushed the envelope. Recent news points to the fact they have.
4.7″ or better
1080P
8+ cores
2GB+
SD Card Slot
3K+ Ma Removable battery
Aluminum Unibody
Keylime Pie
Awesome (fast, great pics, features. don’t care about mp)
It’s hard for me to believe that Motorola/Google will “waste” the MWC later this month. Does the X-Phone get announced and shown there? google is as interested in”Sales Denial” to Apple and Samsung as they as they are interested in immediate sales. I could see an introduction at MWC, enough pre-production units to get the ink flowing, and a preorder plan that would nail down production planning.
I have read numerous reports that Google is going to sit the MWC out. Keep your ear to the ground and let us know if you hear differently.
I hope they make it a power user phone, forgot slim, tiny, girlie phones, I want a phone with an 8 core processor, I want a 60 MP camera, I Want it to have a 18 inch sub that pops out the top at the push of a button, I want it to Automatically seek out and find iphones, and eat them instead of using batteries.
In short, they should build a man’s phone, instead of these little girl devices.
I’m joking a bit, but really most phones are to feminine if you ask me. Tiny, thin, weak. I’d take a bit thicker longer phone with better everything, any day.
Hell ya. I have not been a huge fan of the slight curves and radius corners of the Galaxy SIII. I want welded steel with sharp corners. Stop contouring!

You my friend, are a genius.
